The Grampian Basketball Committee would like to welcome players, coaches, officials and fans to the 2018/19 season. In what promises to be yet another exciting year of competitive basketball we welcome new teams joining the league to mix things up.
Men’s Division 1 will see 6 teams battling for top seed in what will be an exciting playoffs if last year was anything to go by! Panthers finished the regular season in the top spot, but were unable to maintain their form going into the play off finals, which saw East Warriors pick up the title.
Men’s Division 2 sees 9 teams facing up, with new teams LT-TEAM and Aberdeen Kings eager to reign supreme. With the loss of Police not competing this season, top spot in Division 2 is definitely up for grabs.
Women’s Division 1 sees the same 5 clubs competing: Aberdeen Uni, Flames, Grizzlies, Panthers and Police. Grizzlies continued their dominance last season, losing only one game to Aberdeen Uni on the way to winning the league. With all teams getting new players, we are excited for a competitive women’s league this year.
The Grampian Cup is always exciting, with teams like RGU entering and for the bigger clubs entering mixed teams from Div 1 and Div 2. Last year there was a cup upset in the women’s league with Flames taking the title after a tense final match 72-67. For the Men, East Warriors completed the domestic double picking up the Grampian Cup seeing off Panthers in the final in an equally close encounter 74-70.
Nationally our local teams had great success in the Chairman’s Cup, BC Lituanica defended their title taking the cup back to Aberdeen for the second year in a row. Grizzlies won the Women’s cup in a very closely fought final against Grangemouth Ladies. This season we have teams competing in both the Chairman’s Cup and Scottish Cup so we hope to bring even more success back to our region.
For all of our Grampian teams 2018/19 hopes to be another excellent season of basketball!
