May 9, 2010, 5:23 pm What a season it has been. In the Men’s competitions Grampian Police faced the toughest challenge ever with all teams competing all very capable of winning the League or Challenge Shield and in the Womens Competitions Beacon experienced their closest challenge in recent years. The Womens competition went down to the wire with Beacon Ladeez, RGU and Portlethen all staking strong claims for League and the Cup. In the League Portlethen proved to be the consistent team and won the league for the first time in the teams relatively short existence a fantastic effort and hard earned. Beacon Ladeez showed they are not a spent force however and Won the Mappin and Webb Cup by defeating RGU in the final. The remaining Womens Cup final was contested by Grampian Police and Beacon Beez with the Police Women proving to be too strong for the young Bucksburn side. The Men’s season began with Group stages and early results confirmed that Grampian Police winners of League and Cup for the past 4 years would face tough challenges for their titles. The newly formed Granite City Grizzlies, a strengthened Portlethen side along with League stalwarts Banchory Stags and Beacon Jazz were lining up to have a go. In the Cup Competitions Portlethen saw their way past Banchory to the Final whilst new boys Grizzlies out grizzled the Police in a tight semi final. Both teams battled out an enthralling Challenge Shield final with the Grizzlies coming out on top and claiming Silverware in their inaugural season. Banchory Stags and Beacon Jazz provided a level of entertainment in the Cameron Cup final normally reserved for the Challenge Shield with the Deeside Club claiming the “consolation cup” for the first time in their distinguished history. The Simpson Cup was equally as entertaining with the ever improving Garioch losing out in a closely contested battle with Westhill Warriors which saw the Men from the West win by the narrowest of margins. The competition was equally as fierce in the Play Offs with the Gold Section providing the toughest challenge for years. All of the top sides took points of each other and it would be fair to say that any of the sides could have won the League. Ultimately Portlethen proved consistency counts and were worthy winners. In the Silver Section Garioch were rewarded for their efforts and won the section. Pecten and Westhill provided close competition but the lack of strength in depth proved too much for them. The Bronze section was hampered by call offs and rearranged ties but Banchory Bucks proved there is no substitute for experience and the Seasoned Banchory side won through at the end. Overall this has been a fascinating season with new League winners in the Men’s and Womens league – Portlethen. The slight downside for the competition this season has been the number of “call offs” and rearranged fixtures resulting in a fixture “jam” at the end of the season. However there have been many positives this season with the emergence of new talent and strong competition – well done to all who competed and officiated during the season and now we must look forward to the new season! All members, players, clubs and officials are reminded the AGM takes place on Tuesday 8 June 2010 at the Palm Court Hotel. Jan 7, 2010, 12:40 am The Second half of the Mens season is about to begin and is really shaping up to be one of the closest contested seasons for a long time. In the GOLD Section Grampian Police aiming for their 5th Gold Section win in successive years will be pushed all the way by the other 5 teams. New comers Granite City Grizzlies who were the other unbeaten team in the qualifying stages will make sure of that. Long time rivals Banchory Stags and Beacon Jazz will also fancy their chances this season. Portlethen Pumas are also on a great run of form and continued success in the National competitions is testimony to their strength. Recently promoted Elgin Eagles have grown during the past two seasons are sure to make things uncomfortable for those striving for Gold. If the Gold Section looks close SILVER may well be even closer. All six teams in this section are experienced campaigners and any one of the six sides could grab silver. The BRONZE section has a real mix of youth and experience and promises to provide some close and entertaining matches and will be fascinating to watch these games unfold during the course of the season. |
