Grampian stand their ground against ROCKS
Sep 17, 2009, 10:32 amThe Grampian Select squad held their own against the only professional team in Scotland, the Glasgow Rocks, on Tuesday. After only training together 3 times the select squad proved that the standard of basketball in the North East is as strong as ever.
The Grampian side came out all guns blazing with three consecutive 3 pointers in a row from an array of players. Catching the professional team off guard and winning most of the way through the first quarter. However, once the Rocks found their stride there was no stopping them. With a couple of thunderous dunks from Scottish International Gareth Murray, the rocks swept their opposition aside in the second and third quarters. The Grampian squad dug deep to try and regain the scoreline outscoring their previous second and third quarter scores combined in the final ten minutes of the match. Despite their efforts the final score in the match was 41 Grampian 87 Rocks.
The Top scorers from the match were
Grampian - Nick Compton (c) on 12, Andy Norrie on 11 Duncan McCalister on 6 and Robert Smith on 4
Rocks - Jessie Sapp on 20, Gareth Murray on 19, Scott Russell and Rob Yanders on 12, Sterl Davis and Mike Copeland on 10
The Performance of the Grampian Select squad impressed the sell out crowd of 350 people in the new Aberdeen Sports Village. It also caught the eye of Rocks owner Iain Reid, who said that there might be scope for a professional team in Aberdeen. More on that in the Press and Journal report below.
http://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/Article.aspx/1399827
A big thank you to all those involved in a highly successful event, the players, the coaches, the volunteers, the officials and mostly the crowd that turned up to support their local team.
